Julie Rooney was forty-eight years old in the summer of 2010, and to anyone looking in from the outside, she appeared to be living the dream. She and her husband owned houses in Silicon Valley and Hawaii, flew first class and stayed in five-star hotels. Their four children were all in college.
But Julie was on her last legs. She suffered from Addison’s disease, Crohn’s colitis, diabetes and hypothyroidism, and after years of synthetic steroids she weighed almost 200 pounds. She had blood drawn more often than most women had their nails done. The bones in her feet were as brittle as glass, and the team of doctors who had cared for her for years had run out of ideas.
“If your illnesses don’t kill you,” her endocrinologist told her, as gently as she could, “the drugs will.”
And then, when Julie had nearly given up hope, a scrap of paper with a hastily scrawled name and a phone number changed her life. Eighteen harrowing months later, against all odds, she had weaned herself off all her medications and her labs had come back normal for the first time in more than ten years.
The lessons she learned during her extraordinary journey of healing will resonate with all those who have struggled to regain their health, and more importantly, to understand their own role in the process.
“We can heal ourselves and each other with our thoughts, our actions and our stories, and in so doing we can heal the world." – Julie Rooney

About the Author

Julie Rooney grew up on a farm in Maryland, and after graduating from high school earned her nursing degree and went to work as a registered nurse. In 1983, at the age of twenty-two, she married an MD. Together they had four children. In the spring of 2000, she was diagnosed with her first autoimmune disease and began her terrifying descent into chronic illness. Today she leads a healthy, medication-free life in San Francisco. This is her first book.

Book Review 1

"In this well-crafted memoir, debut author Rooney chronicles her journey toward holistic wellness as she healed from a host of debilitating diseases and years of “emotional malnutrition.”
At age 49, Rooney “was being treated for a laundry list of auto-immune diseases,” and her family was falling apart. As she paints this bleak picture, she introduces readers to her past through flashbacks—physical and sexual abuse as a child, her joyful marriage disintegrating as her husband’s career progressed, and dozens of doctors piling on diagnoses and medications. In 2010, Rooney’s life took a life-altering turn when she moved to Hawaii and met Xavier, a shrewd, composed Eastern healer who guided her toward health. With his help, she separated herself from the “toxic environment” of her family, established a healthy diet, and learned to nurture herself...." -- Kirkus Reviews

Book Review 2

Til Health Do Us Part One Woman's Extraordinary Story of Healing addresses the problems of over-medication and drug interactions and follows author Julie Rooney's downward spiral from a series of debilitating diseases, charting the even more debilitating side effects caused by the many medications she was prescribed.

Given modern concerns about drug interactions and impacts, the timing of this story could not be better. An increasing number of patients are finding that the side effects of supposedly-benign treatments cause major problems. The question then becomes one of what to do, and Rooney maintains that patients can actually be empowered to take back their lives (albeit, not haphazardly).

Her process of investigation, information, and recovery will serve as a blueprint for others facing similar issues, even if their diagnoses are different. Hers is not a generalized discussion, however. Chapters pinpoint specific drugs prescribed for specific problems even as she notes that.... -- Midwest Book Review

"I LOVED this book. I don't say that lightly. Julie Rooney presents a new outlook on self care, perseverance, and relationships. I devoured this book in a day and have been thinking about it ever since. Am I taking care of myself? Rooney makes it clear that it's never too late, and I really am left feeling like if she can do it, so can I.

Am I working to love myself as I am, and not how I perceive others see me?

I don't have nearly as many health concerns as Rooney, but that feeling of stress and anxiety really hit home. As a stay at home mother, I could really relate to her feelings of watching her husband leave every day, loneliness and worrying about the kids. Sometimes I think we think medications will really help us, without addressing the actual problem. Rooney's journey makes it clear that sometimes we need to address our emotional malnutrition to treat physical symptoms... and it isn't going to be simple and easy."

'Til Health Do Us Part One Woman Extraordinary Story of Healing edition by Julie Rooney Health Fitness Dieting eBooks Reviews

  • I VERY seldom leave five stars on a review, but this book hit home (and a homerun!) for me. As a woman with grown children and a few health concerns of my own I find it disturbing that more docs aren't taking a whole-person (holistic) approach to healing, and often worse, can be condescending, especially to women. Conversely, not even a physician can fix a person if they're not willing to participate in their own healing, which physician friends tell me is just as frustrating for them...

That this author, a nurse to boot, took healing into her own hands, with the help of an unexpected guide, and not only survived her ordeals but THRIVED – is a wake-up call to all of us. I hope this story gets shared a LOT because her journey could be any one of ours. I'm inspired and uplifted, more than I expected to be, and the writing, injected with humor and passion, made for a five-star worthy book that I'll be talking about with friends and family.

And yeah, they'll have to get their own copies, this one's MINE!
  • In this amazing book by Julie Rooney, she details her journey from sickness to health in a way that is uplifting and gives hope to those who have suffered in any of the ways that she describes. The book begins with her telling her family that she is going to make a change and follow her daughter to Hawaii and try to reclaim some of her life. It ends up to be a decision that most likely meant the difference between life and death for her. There, she meets a man who helps her on her journey to physical, mental, and spiritual wellness. It is not an easy path for her by any means—but neither has the path been that her illnesses have forced her upon.

The author is breathtakingly honest about all that has happened to her in her distant past, recent past, and the advancing present that she details in the book. The narrative weaves seamlessly between what is she experiences in Hawaii, her childhood and young adult years, and the years during which her diseases progress. When she discusses the evolution of her illnesses, she backs it up with actual doctors’ notes and laboratory results, allowing the reader to see her as she was seen the medical establishment. She's able to show how the progression altered her, her family, and her prospects for the future. It is harrowing to read how so much was affected by what was happening to her body.

I am an RN myself, so I understood a lot of what she was saying from a medical standpoint. But the point of this book is more about the juxtaposition between that model and what she found on Hawaii. She gained so much. She truly got her life back in a miraculous way. While I have not struggled with multiple diseases like she had to do (just one, but a life changer), I have I had my own journey that reflects a fraction of hers, so I can understand how much that means. For me, reading this book became personal as I could relate to her medical struggles, path to wisdom, and the importance of wholeness and wellness. I thank her for her willingness to be open, put it all down on paper, and share it with others; she has given me insights that will help me further my own continuing quest for total wellness.

I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.
