Badlands Badlands Book 1 Audible Audio Edition Morgan Brice Kale Williams Tantor Audio Books Reviews
- If you've not read this book, stop what you are doing and IMMEDIATELY buy it! You are in for one hell of a ride.
Regardless of whether the main couple in a suspense novel are female/male, male/male, female/female, what brings depth to the story is the mystery. That is the main foundation to a great mystery, and "Badlands" has it down to a blood-curdling science. Murder, psychics, victims who are just trying to live their lives the best they can, evil, magic - all add up to an amazing book you can't put down. But....drop in two totally opposite main characters like Vic and Simon, and you have yourself a winner. The characters are not stereotypical gays that often appear in some books. They are two men who stay true to themselves, to what they feel is right even if the outcome may destroy them.
As you can tell, I absolutely loved this book. - This was a great start to a new series that I am definitely looking forward to. It was really fun to see myrtle beach, I even looked it up on Google maps to get an idea of the scenery and where some of the landmarks were, which made it even better. The murder mystery was good and the finale was suspenseful. There wasn't an overload of information on the many different myths and legends, just touching on it enough that you understood what was happening. The relationship between vic and simon was sweet with hardly any angst. Definitely recommend.
- Simon is a shop owner, author, expert on folklore and mythology, psychic and ghost whisperer. The setting is Myrtle Beach on the strand, where shop owners keep an eye on each other. There's a good vibe with the ocean, the tourists, the life there, working for a living.
Detective Vic is at his wits end with his present case and decides consulting a psychic wouldn't hurt. Of course Vic and Simon hit it off, instant attraction, yet their relationship starts at the worst possible time. There's a serial killer targeting the neighborhood. It's a mystery with a paranormal twist, cop and psychic working together but the case comes first for both of them. In fact there wasn't enough trust, not enough time spent together, that it was hard to believe the men could build a relationship. Yes, Vic had doubts and they were ruling him until the last minute. Then he has a change of heart but no resolve or a conversation. Someone is owed an apology. Things end too quickly, no conclusion or an interrogation with Simon or listen to that recording. I expected some mention of mended broken bones . . But no, Simon is up and raring to go three months later and not a word about his health. Now. If this is a start to a series I'd expect more in the next book. As it is I wonder if this is a stand alone. There was mention in the post notes of other books that connect to back up characters in this one. Anyway, I enjoyed it, wished the conclusion wasn't so rushed. - Dan's Wife - First time reader of Morgan's (Gail's), so I'm new to this world that she has created. And I have to say, I thoroughly enjoyed this story, having read it in just a few days (I tend to be a very slow reader, so if I get through a book in only a few days, you know I was engrossed in it).
I absolutely loved the two main characters, Simon and Vic. Need more stories with them, pronto! The secondary characters were fun as well, especially Simon's best friend Tracey. Would have liked to have seen the dynamic of Simon's store clerk helper Pete with Simon more, and his view of Simon and Vic starting to date each other.
The crux of the story revolves around a serial killer hiding in the midst of the Myrtle Beach boardwalk area community. The murder spree was gruesome and horrifying, catching me by surprise several times throughout the book. Although I didn't quite understand why Simon was originally being targeted, even when that was explained toward the end. Perhaps that will be clearer upon a re-read.
Oddly enough, my least favorite parts of the book were the explicit sex scenes. I was impatient to get back to the main storyline and solve the mystery with the killer. Or perhaps I was just jealous of two fictional characters being that I'm perpetually single, haha.
In any event, the story easily deserved my 5 stars. I'll be on the lookout for further stories with these characters. - When I picked this book up, I didn't expect it to creep me out. To be fair, I can freak myself out watching crime shows....so reading this late at night, in the dark, probably wasn't my best idea. But in my defense, I couldn't help it. This book is so freaking good. I didn't want to stop reading it to go to bed. I got totally wrapped up in the mystery, I couldn't put it down. I loved the way the whole thing played out and how Simon's gift was helpful to the case and a hindrance on his relationship with Vic.
I really loved Simon. He had some serious guts. Where I would have been hiding in my closet, shaking in fear, he was out there taking care of his "skeleton crew" and trying to solve the murders. All while falling hard for sexy Vic. I felt bad that Vic was torn between what he knew and what Simon was telling him. And I wasn't a big fan of his partner, Ross. He acted like a jerk for most of the book.
I'm excited that there are more books with Simon and Vic. I'd like to see them solve some mysteries together. - A most thoughtful m/m romance/mystery. I always enjoy the mix of a tough guy and a sensitive guy, then as we explore their personalities, we find each has some of the qualities of the other. The story is riveting, there are some murders, but it has, if I may say, a happy ending. The author clearly did a lot of research and the detailed action, both spiritual and police-work wise, kept me interested. The characters are life-like and you will definitely care about all of them!
