The Anxiety and Worry Workbook The Cognitive Behavioral Solution 9781606239186 Medicine Health Science Books Reviews

  • I am a cognitive behavior therapist specializing in anxiety disorders. I often recommend this book to my clients who have generalized anxiety, excessive worry, panic attacks or social anxiety. I consider this to be an advanced workbook as it is more helpful to people who have already read a more basic workbook on anxiety or clients who already have a basic understanding of CBT. It has a strong emphasis on cognitive skills to help you change your thinking about anxiety by learning to assess danger more realistically as well as increase your ability to cope with the situations that make you anxious. In Chapter 7, it also includes some behavioral work incorporating exposure therapy, which is critical for anyone trying to get control of anxiety. Research has indicated that exposure may be the most critical element in reducing anxiety. I have found that a combination of exposure plus cognitive restructuring is most beneficial. Otherwise, people may be too afraid or unmotivated to face their fears in real life. The cognitive work helps people get ready to do things that are uncomfortable. Paradoxically, the way to reduce anxiety is to approach it and even welcome anxiety into your life. The less you fear being anxious, the less anxious you will feel. I really like Chapter 11 on Overcoming Worry. It is one of the best chapters I have read on strategies to deal with worry. Overall, I think this is a superb workbook and, if you can do all the exercises in this workbook, you will gain new skills to manage anxiety and worry.
  • I have Social Anxiety Disorder, Panic Disorder with agoraphobia and PTSD. This has been a huge help in learning how to manage my anxiety and not let it control me. I will be trying similar workbooks in the future.
  • This is a good book if you follow up with all of the homework that comes with it. I found a therapist would work better. You need a coach to help you through this book. There is too much back and forth between the work sheets that makes this self help a little difficult
  • I wish I knew of this workbook sooner. In today’s world most doctors will just fill you with medications without even suggesting therapy. I bought this book as a tool to use while trying to understand my panic and anxiety and get my life back, while looking for a new therapist and tapering off of my medication. I have a lot going on. I am a recovering alcoholic who no longer uses a bottle to self-medicate and who is no longer willing to “take a pill and feel fine”. I want my life back on my terms. I’m fairly confident this workbook will help me become the person, the mom, the wife that I once was.
  • This book is life-changing. If you are curious to learn more about anxiety, panic attacks, etc. or hoping to retrain your anxious thoughts, I highly recommend this book. It helps you rationalize and think-through your anxious thoughts and find ways to tolerate the anxiety. The exercises can be a little overwhelming at times, but they do help you think differently about anxiety. If you are on the fence, buy it. It's worth every penny and then some.
  • I have several editions of this book and would recommend it for anyone who suffers from anxiety. There is so much to learn which aided in putting my anxious brain at ease.
  • My counselor loaned me her copy to start reading and the chapter she had me start was spot on to me. I realized doing the workbook part on separate paper was not going to beneficial unless I had the book to refer to. It is a GREAT price, shipped fast and VERY beneficial for anyone that suffers anxiety. Mine is extreme and this book is a lifesaver for me. I get so much more out of the workbook part!
  • I've been around the anxiety block a few times in my 68 years and find this workbook to be very helpful. Reading and working through it I've picked up even more info that helps me look at my anxiety rationally. To understand that you aren't alone and that there's a reason for it deflate the whole anxiety cycle. You won't be rid of your anxiety but will gain some tools to help in your lifelong relationship with it. Also, no you don't have to read the book cover to cover- the intro discusses various ways of digesting it.
