In 2001, Hellboy quit the B.P.R.D., leaving Abe Sapien, Liz Sherman, and a bizarre roster of special agents to defend the world from any occult threats, and the growing menace of the frog army.
Mike Mignola and Dark Horse present the complete Plague of Frogs saga in four volumes, from Hollow Earth to King of Fear. This first book explores the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense after Hellboy's departure, cracks open the secrets of Abe Sapien's origin, and sets the war on frogs in motion.

"I love BPRD. The stories are creepy, but not overdone. The art is always something beautiful to look at. This collection is so much better than trying to read it from single comic books (Which is what I've been doing for years. I just found out about this format last month.)

It's a bit heavy, so have a good bed or desk to lay the book one while you read it.

I bought all 4 volumes at the same time, so all my reviews are pretty much the same. Roll with it."

BPRD Plague of Frogs Volume 1 Mike Mignola Guy Davis 9781595826756 Books Reviews

  • This collects three trades and is much cheaper in the long run if you plan on reading more.
Instead of buying 12 trades, you can buy 4 of these books for roughly the same price if you're smart about used copies or just get lucky.
You don't need to know MUCH about the universe of MIke Mignola to understand. Just know that Hellboy left the BPRD and now some of the men and creatures working for it are unsure about their future in the Government Organization.
They investigate monsters, creatures, and other stuff. Pretty standard stuff. You get to learn more about Lobster Johnson, Roger, and Abe Sapien which is PERFECT because they are all great characters.
It's a fine introduction to the Universe, too, and not bogged down too much in continuity but sort of creates it's own without relying too much on Hellboy.
Pick it up! Even if you've never read Mignola before this is a fine beginning place!
  • I purchased this as an upgrade to my paperback collections, and I'm extremely impressed by the quality of the edition. It's an absolutely massive tome collecting everything B.P.R.D. from the first arc, Hollow Earth, through the titular of Plague of Frogs proper. If you are a fan of the series looking to upgrade your collection, this is an essential purchase. If you'd like it to more closely match up with the Hellboy Library Editions, you can remove the dust jacket for a similarly black cover. Be aware that these aren't any larger than the trades, though the quality is a significant step up.

So why not give a higher rating? The simple reason is that this is a mixed collection, and potential new fans need to hear that. There's the feeling that the contributors didn't really know what they were aiming for and didn't yet have the best idea for who could best depict the series. Early stories subtly seem to say, "Boy, I wish Hellboy were here," while the art varies wildly in style and quality. B.P.R.D. currently has a more varied stable of contributors than what you'll see throughout these hardcover collections, but it's clear that each one brings particular strengths to the series; here you get the artistic equivalent of trying on shirts to find the one that looks best.

Fortunately, this collection ends with Plague of Frogs, which is where the series found its feet. From that point on, in addition to consistent artwork, there's a commitment to long-form stories. If you are leery of comics because they can be so slight, Plague of Frogs will show you that B.P.R.D. is, in many ways, a string of serialized novels that offer both a quick pace and a substantial amount of content.

If you can accommodate your expectations and remember that the series only goes up from here, Plague of Frogs Volume 1 is a great purchase. If you are a newcomer, this is absolutely the best way to experience a fantastic series, and you should start from the beginning despite the teething problems.
  • I've been a fan of Hellboy since the first movie introduced me to the character, and I quickly devoured all of the paperback releases which were available at the time. Although I continued to read subsequent Hellboy releases, and I was aware of the B.P.R.D. spinoff series, I mostly ignored the latter. If you have committed the same sin, or if you are completely new to the Mignolaverse, I urge you to pick up this book! The B.P.R.D. series is every bit as good as the book that spawned it, and with the big red guy out of the way, the supporting characters have room to grow and develop. This volume sees Liz going on a personal journey to gain control over both her powers and herself, as well as Abe learning why he has that "Innsmouth look". We also see the beginning of the frog war, and once you start reading that, I'm sure you'll want to pick up volume 2. It just gets better and better.
  • There is a 4 hard cover book trade paper back series of the plague of frogs stories. Of you love or just like Hellboy this is for u & a cheap way to get them all in 4 different vol.'s that continue the story arc. Other than that I won't spoil it for u, like so many other reviewers do.!!Just know this is a great series in a big vol. to get you teeth into. !!

  • Absolutely loved it. Got up to Hellboy the wild hunt omnibus vol 3 and then decided to get this when looking at a timeline and I can’t wait to read the next one
  • The BPRD Plague of Frog books are incredible! Every volume is packed full of excellent art, characters you care about, stories that can make you feel giddy or bum you out to no end. The books are incredibly high quality from the page thickness to the binding, these are going to stand the test of time (or multiple people reading them a few times a piece). Big props to Dark Horse for making these books so high quality and affordable. Thank you!
